How RangaLabs Built a Monitor That Watches DG Shipping So You Don’t Have To

DG Shipping publishes new circulars, orders, and notices on a regular basis. So does AMSA. A maritime professional or shipping company that relies on a regulation database needs that database to stay current — because an outdated answer is worse than no answer.

The question we had to solve when building MarineRef was simple: how do you keep 2,777 documents up to date without a human checking the DG Shipping website every week?

The answer: build a monitor

We built an automated workflow — the DGMA Daily Monitor — that runs every week and checks the DG Shipping website for new publications. It scans for new DGS Circulars, DGS Orders, and MS Notices in parallel. If something new has been published since the last check, it flags it automatically.

What happens when something new is found

The new document is downloaded, processed into chunks, converted into vectors, and added to the MarineRef knowledge base. The next time a user asks a question that relates to the new circular, MarineRef already has it. No manual update. No lag. No missed publication.

The same principle for AMSA

We built a separate monthly update workflow for AMSA Marine Orders that checks for amendments and new publications from the Australian Maritime Safety Authority. When changes are detected, the affected documents are re-processed and the knowledge base is updated automatically.

Why this matters

A chatbot is only as good as the documents it was trained on. If the documents are six months old and a new circular has changed the rule, the chatbot gives a wrong answer — confidently. The monitor ensures MarineRef is always working from current, official documents.
