What Is a Digital Twin? — The Live Virtual Mirror of the Physical World

What is a digital twin?

Manufacturing — Siemens and GE use digital twins of production lines and jet engines to monitor performance and predict maintenance needs. Smart cities — Singapore has built a digital twin of the entire city to plan infrastructure, simulate disasters, and optimise traffic flow. Healthcare — digital twins of individual patients are being developed to simulate how a person might respond to a specific treatment before it is administered. Maritime — digital twins of vessels are used to monitor hull performance, engine health, and fuel efficiency in real time. Construction — digital twins of buildings are used throughout design, construction, and operation.

A digital twin on its own is a monitoring tool. When combined with AI, it becomes a predictive and optimisation tool. The AI analyses the stream of real-time data from the twin, identifies patterns, detects anomalies, predicts failures, and recommends actions. The twin provides the data.
