What Is Machine Learning? — Explained Simply

Machine learning is one of those phrases that sounds intimidating but describes something surprisingly intuitive. It is simply a way of teaching computers to learn from experience — rather than programming them with a fixed set of rules.

Traditional programming works like this: a human writes a rule, the computer follows it. If the email contains the word "lottery", mark it as spam. Simple. But what happens when spammers change their wording? The rule breaks. Someone has to update it. Then it breaks again.

Machine learning takes a different approach

Instead of writing rules, you show the computer thousands of examples. Here are 10,000 emails. These 7,000 are spam. These 3,000 are not. The computer studies the examples, finds the patterns on its own, and builds an internal model that can classify new emails it has never seen before.

No one told it what to look for. It figured it out from the data.

The three ingredients of machine learning

Data — the examples the computer learns from. The more examples, and the better the quality, the better the learning. Algorithm — the method the computer uses to find patterns in the data. Model — what the computer becomes after learning. It can now make predictions on new data.

Face unlock on your phone learned from thousands of face images. Fraud detection at your bank learned from millions of normal and fraudulent transactions. None of these were programmed with fixed rules. They all learned from data.
