What Is the Internet of Things (IoT)? — When the Physical World Goes Online


For most of computing history, the internet connected computers to computers. Humans sat at one end, typing and clicking. Machines responded.
The Internet of Things changed this. IoT connects physical objects — devices, machines, sensors, vehicles, appliances — directly to the internet, allowing them to collect and transmit data without human involvement. The world itself becomes a source of data.
What is the Internet of Things?
The Internet of Things is the network of physical objects embedded with sensors, software, and connectivity that enables them to collect and exchange data over the internet. The ‘things’ can be almost anything: a temperature sensor in a cold storage unit, a GPS tracker on a delivery vehicle, a vibration sensor on a factory machine, a smartwatch on your wrist, or a pressure gauge on a ship’s engine.
Why IoT matters
Before IoT, data about the physical world had to be collected manually. Someone would walk the factory floor and record machine readings. A driver would report their location by phone. A technician would inspect equipment on a schedule. This was slow, expensive, and incomplete.
IoT automates data collection from the physical world. Sensors report continuously — every second, every minute — without anyone having to go and look. The result is a continuous, real-time stream of data about what is actually happening in the physical environment.
Where IoT is already running
Smart homes — thermostats, door locks, lights, and appliances connected and controllable remotely. Wearables — smartwatches and fitness trackers collecting health data continuously. Industrial IoT — sensors on factory machines monitoring temperature, vibration, and pressure to detect anomalies before failures occur. Smart cities — sensors monitoring traffic flow, air quality, waste bin levels, and energy usage. Agriculture — soil moisture sensors and weather stations optimising irrigation automatically. Maritime — vessel tracking, engine monitoring, and fuel consumption sensors reporting data in real time.
IoT and AI together
IoT generates the data. AI makes sense of it. A sensor on a ship engine produces thousands of readings per hour. Without AI, a human would have to review all of it — which is not realistic. With AI, the system analyses the stream automatically, detects patterns that precede failures, and raises an alert before anything breaks. IoT provides the eyes and ears. AI provides the intelligence.
The simple rule
Traditional internet: computers talking to computers, with humans in between. IoT: physical objects talking to systems directly, generating a continuous stream of real-world data — no human required to collect it.
